Hi, everyone. Well, as you probably know by now, we did it! We broadcast our first high definition newscast this past weekend! Like whenever something is new, we will still be working out some of the “bugs” in the system, but for the most part, and as far as news is concerned, we’ve more than reached our goal several months before the FCC’s mandatory requirements! I hope that you’re enjoying our newscasts even more now that they’re in high definition, and I hope that all of you who have faithfully been reading my blog will agree with us and feel that the time and expense involved in this conversion process was worth what you’re now seeing when you turn on WRTV news each day.

As I had hoped to do, I’m sharing a few more pictures of some of the work which was being done in the studio in order for us to be ready for our first high definition news broadcast. This, as I mentioned in a previous blog, included lighting, installing railings to add more depth to the set, and extending and adding a monitor to the anchor desk.

Finally, I want to thank you very much for reading my blog during the last several months. I hope that you’ve enjoyed it and feel that you’ve received the information that you had hoped to receive from it. Take care, and thank you for your interest in WRTV and for your viewer loyalty. We really do appreciate it! Happy viewing!!!!

To complete the picture for you regarding our analogue to digital conversion, I need to mention the changes which will be taking place in the studio regarding our news set. These changes mostly involve upgrades and cosmetic changes as well as lighting changes. Some of what will need to be done will have to take place between our final analogue broadcast and our first high definition broadcast. The plan, as you’re reading this, is to not air any of our newscasts on Saturday, October 11th, and to use that entire day and night to accomplish all that is necessary to air our first high definition newscast the next evening on Sunday, October 12th at 6pm. Fortunately, since it’s something which isn’t seen on the air, we were already able to tear down a wall between the weather office and the studio for the purpose of allowing more space for our new high definition cameras. Below is a “sneak preview” of a few of the more specific changes that we’re considering for the studio and the anchor desk.

This is a current photo of our main studio, anchor desk and set.

In my fourth blog I showed you a little of the new equipment that had been installed in our new control room. Now that most of this equipment is in place, I thought that I would share a few more pictures of this room with you. Even though this room appears ready for use, some computers still remain to be programmed, and there has, and will continue to be, extensive training for all of the directors who will be operating this equipment. Our goal is to be on the air with our Ignite System sometime in October. At that time all of our newscasts will be in high definition, but until that time, we will be doing a number of rehearsals with this new equipment and control room.

In all of the many activities in which the station is involved in the analog to digital conversion process, I almost overlooked our weather department! For quite some time the WRTV weather department has been provided all of their base graphics, templates and data from WSI (Weather Services International). This will still be true as we convert to high definition, but this service will now be providing all new graphics and data which will be compatible with our future high definition format. Even though WSI will handle this, we at WRTV will have to replace and install all new computers and monitors in the weather office to accomodate this transition. Kevin, Paul, and Crystal are in the process of training on how to use these new maps and data with the new computer system.
<img width="150" height="150" src="http://rtv6blogs.com/rtv6_6newshd/files//2008/08/dsc_0136-150x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="This is another new rack which had to be installed to accomodate the new weather computers and other weather equipment.

Another key “player” in our transition from analog to digital that I’ve yet to discuss is our promotion/programming department. This department plays an important role at WRTV. One of their many responsibilities is to organize all of the events that the station sponsors throughout the year as well as organize and coordinate, often in conjunction with the news department, projects such as the annual RTV6 Toy Drive, the annual RTV6 Fan Club, etc. Another function of this department is to decide which syndicated shows we will air. From “Live With Regis and Kelly” in the morning to “Judge Judy” in the afternoon to “Extra” in the evening, these shows are the results of decisions made at the beginning of the season’s schedule by the promotion/programming department.

Of course, after the decision of WHAT to air has been determined, we need to promote these shows to inform viewers like you of what WRTV has to offer! For example, each day the syndicated shows send the same set of promos to every station in the country which will be airing their show for that particular day. Each station will then air some of these promos but not before “tagging” them with their own announcer and graphics; but in the case of newscasts and specials that we air, no outside source supplies us with any promos so we have to completely produce them ourselves, and it’s the responsibility of our promotion photographer/editors to accomplish this.

With our transition from analog to digital, nothing I’ve discussed so far will change, but because beginning this fall all of our newscasts will be in high definition, all of our news opens will need to be reproduced. Because we have so many shows and so many anchors, this will be a rather large undertaking by the promotion department. It’s not only the promotion department that will be busy shooting and editing these opens for the next several weeks, but our graphics department will be busy as well creating new graphics for these opens. Not only will the opens require new graphics, but ALL of our graphics will need to be reproduced for high definition and to fit the new 16×9 format. If you’re at all familiar with any of our newscasts, you’re aware that there are a lot of new graphics to be made!!!!

Below are pictures of the recent shoot in the studio by our promotion department for what will become our news opens this fall. These opens took over a week to shoot and are now in the process of being edited. You’ll witness the results of this work in October so please stay tuned…

In my last blog, I discussed a little about what is involved to get a newscast on the air. As you now know, in order to convert from analog to digital, we have to replace our current control room and the system we’re now using (Parkervision) with an entire new control room and system (Ignite). Below are pictures of some of the new equipment that has recently been installed and is in the process of being installed in what will eventually be our new control room.

To help you better understand our transition to digital television, I’ve decided to take you back seven years to 2001! Since what was required to air a newscast before that time is substantially different than what is currently required, I thought that I would share this difference with you.

Before 2001, a MINIMUM of thirteen people working simultaneously was needed to get a newscast on the air, and after 2001, a MAXIMUM of five people was needed. (This number excludes news editors/photographers and on-air talent.) Back then, to do a live newscast required a prompter operator, a floor director, three studio camera operators, two tape operators, one technical director, one audio technician, one director, one producer, one graphics artist, and an ENG coordinator.

In 2001 WRTV purchased a computerized system called Parkervision. Parkervision was able to eliminate several positions and still enable us to put a quality show on the air. We now only needed a prompter operator, a director, a producer, one camera operator, and an ENG coordinator working simultaneously to do a newscast. More and more stations throughout the country are moving or have moved in this direction.

The purpose for giving you a little of this history is because we will be replacing our Parkervision system with a new system called Ignite. Ignite is our digital replacement for Parkervision. While our Ignite system is being installed, we will still be on the air with Parkervision in our current control room. Since the room in which the directors program and prepare for their shows (the Parkervision Prep room) will become the new Ignite control room, they had to be relocated to another area of the building. As you can imagine, it will be a busy time here at WRTV between now and February 2009!!

All of what you see in this room was moved to another area in the building to make room for what will become the new control room once the Ignite System is up and running." title="p3117684" />

In our first blog, we discussed the transmitter and media center. These were the first requirements towards the analog to digital conversion for WRTV. Now that the media center is completed and the new transmitter has been installed, our next two projects will be working on converting our studio/control room to digital and converting our weather center to digital. These are the two projects on which I’ll be focusing during the coming months.

You’ve seen in the media center how the racks appear once they’re complete with equipment, but we still have MANY more racks and equipment to install for our upcoming projects. Below are a couple of pictures and descriptions of the latest rack/equipment installation process.

I’ll be on vacation next week so hopefully, upon my return, I’ll have several new pictures to take to share with you.

As most of you know, by February 2009 all television stations will be converting from analog to digital broadcasting. Although there is much more talk about digital television due to the February deadline, WRTV has been working on this conversion process since September of 1999. This was when we installed our new transmitter. This was the first step towards the future of local television.

Our next step was to install all new equipment in what we call our “Media Center”. (This room was formerly referred to as the “Tape Room”, but due to computers and the near obsolescence of tape machines, we’ve changed the name of that room!)

Once the transmitter and media center equipment was installed, we were then able to broadcast what limited high definition programming was available from ABC. By February of 2009 not only will network programming be received in high definition, but so will local programming.

This conversion from analog to digital is an enormous undertaking by all stations in both manpower and expense. It’s difficult to put into words and pictures the magnitude of this transition, but during the next several months, we will do our best to keep you informed of this changeover as we engage in this process. Below are a few pictures of some of the work done so far.
