Coach Cal Watch

If you’re like 1800 Memphis and Kentucky fans and are extremely bored, here’s a link to a live web cam set up at Memphis.

http://www.myfoxmemphis.com/generic/video/streaming_1/Live_Stream_1

Occasionally you’ll see a bird flying in front of the camera, or at times like right now, a live report from a Memphis news reporter.  Why do I have the feeling that Coach Cal is going to turn Kentucky down?

You just have to love technology.  2000 people watching a door, and yet somehow, I TOTALLY understand why they are.  I’ve spent 10 mintues looking myself.

Friday Quick Hitters

WHAS in Louisville is reporting that Billy Gillespie won’t be back as the head coach of Kentucky.  They kept taking the story down last night, and Kentucky has denied it thus far.  It just seems inevitable at this point.

Coaches always talk about finding the right fit.  Gillespie was good in both of his stops before Kentucky (UTEP and Texas A&M).  In fact, I think you could call what he did at those schools great.  It just wasn’t for very long periods of time.  Looking back, he may have made the jump to the bigtime a little too quickly.  He seemed to have good relationships in Texas, but not so much at Kentucky.  I guess you have to be true to yourself, and Gillespie couldn’t quite get it done.

If this report is accurate, I would expect Billy Donovan to be the next coach of the Kentucky Wildcats.  He turned them down once, and like Roy Williams going to UNC in ‘04, he won’t be able to turn them down twice.  Basically all the big job openings now (Alabama, Georgia, and Virginia) are on hold waiting to see what happens at Kentucky.  Anthony Grant was on campus at ‘Bama to talk about their position, but I’m sure he’s in no rush if there’s a chance the Florida job is going to be open.  If Alabama really wants him though, they better lock him in now with something he can’t turn down.

As always, it looks like we’ll be engaging in some interesting coaching searches as the season winds down.  Virginia looks to be gunnin’ for a big hire.  The rumors are the best part, unless it involves a coach still coaching in the tournament.  Then, it’s flat out rude and ridiculous.

I’ve come to the conclusion that CBS needs to add a feature where you can choose which game you want to watch each night.  I’m sure this feature is available, but I’m talking about a free feature.  And no, I don’t want to watch a game on my computer.  This stems from me being excited all week long to watch the Missouri-Memphis game.  Being an idiot, I didn’t even think of the fact that Duke and Villanova were playing in the same timeslot.  I guess I don’t have the same thrill of watching Duke lose as I did in 1990, or say 2002.

If anything, the game that starts at 7:07 should run in it’s full entirety.  This way when that game (20 minutes ahead) goes to halftime, you can watch 20 minutes of the second game.  Likewise, you have the same option at the end of game 1, and you can watch the final 8 minutes or so of Game 2 in it’s entirety.  Maybe this makes too much sense.  I’m guessing Duke-Villanova was the game of choice for 85% of the country, so start that one at 7:07.

Regardless, Missouri rolled, and I’ve got a new team to watch going forward.  It may look sloppy at times, but they actually do a nice job of holding onto possession of the basketball.  You would think a team that’s flying all over the court for 40 minutes would turn it over more, but Mike Anderson does an outstanding job.  I always liked Nolan Richardson’s Arkansas teams, and now I feel like Todd Day and Lee Mayberry are going to be at the top of the press at anytime.

Four more good ballgames tonight that I’m truly looking forward to.  In essence, I guess there are only two since that’s the max I can watch.  I always forget how easily swayed I am by outstanding individual performances (typically by guards).  Levance Fields of Pitt had me off my chair last night with that contested three he hit from DEEP to give Pitt the one point lead.  He followed that up with a recovery and layup to keep Pitt ahead for good.  To think I was rooting for Xavier for 39 minutes and 30 seconds and then an individual performance had me flip 180 degrees in the other direction.  Levance Fields wins the Bous Theory’s Get Hype off the Chair player of the night.

Who will it be tonight?  Early money is on Johnny Flynn since I jumped on his bandwagon in the Big East Tourney.  Sherron Collins is a pretty safe bet as well.  As is Terrance Williams from Louisville.  I guess it depends on which games are shown in our local area.

Have a great weekend!

Ramen Noodles and Women’s Hoops

As I drove home from work last night, I couldn’t think of anything better than watching either the NIT or NCAA Women’s Tournament.  Trust me, I tried.  As I waited on my ramen noodles to heat up in the microwave, I decided to flip around between the Baylor-Auburn game and the Michigan State-Duke women’s game.  Since I took Baylor to hit more 3 pointers than Auburn in ESPN’s Streak for Cash, I had a vested interest in that one.  As soon as I turned it there, both teams hit 3 pointers back to back.  I found it extremely interesting that ESPN flashed their 3 point totals after those two makes.  Interesting marketing by their stat guys.

As the microwave started beeping, I flipped to ESPN2 to check out Michigan State-Duke.  There’s something about Michigan State’s center Allyssa DeHaan that I am absolutely fascinated by.  I don’t know if it goes any deeper than the fact that she’s 6′9″ or not, but nontheless, I’m fascinated.  I haven’t decided yet, but it may even be at crush level.  Okay, I’ve decided, and yes it’s at crush level.   The Women’s Tournament usually tends to bring out a few of these each year.  In typical blog fashion, I’ve completely digressed.

As I was watching the game, I continued to get more and more upset at the fact that Michigan State was playing on their home floor!  As a 9 seed versus the #1 seed!  In the men’s draw, folks were complaining that Ohio State was playing in Dayton as an 8 seed.  Think of this uproar!  A number 9 seed playing on their actual home floor against the #1 seed.  I can type this same sentence over and over (As I’ve proven with the last 4 sentences) and it still won’t make any sense to me.  I understand that the women’s games have the need to play on home campuses in the first two rounds to sell tickets.  I get that.  What I don’t get is why the #1 seed in the tournament has to play a true road game.  Why wasn’t this segment of 4 teams playing games at Cameron Indoor?

The other side of this argument is the people that say that a #1 seed should beat a #9 no matter where they play the game.  Again, I get that and usually am with the motto of anyone, anytime, anywhere.  BUT, last night Michigan State obviously fed off the crowd.  Duke didn’t help themselves by not making a bucket for the final 7 1/2 minutes, but once MSU got rolling behind their crowd, there was no stopping them.  #2 seed Auburn got rolled in similar fashion (actually not that similar, they lost by 28) to #7 seed Rutgers in a game played AT Rutgers.

#2 seed Stanford had to play #10 seed San Diego State on their home floor and came out victorious, so it goes both ways.  I can’t help but think the homecourt didn’t help SDSU get the opportunity to play Stanford by beating DePaul.  In the end, none of this matters one bit as UCONN is rolling people by 30 points a game (another issue I have with the women’s game).  They’ll likely not see a game in the single digits and Courtney Paris will have to pay back her scholarship.  Allyssa DeHaan and Michigan State roll on, and my game of Hot or Not will last a couple more weeks.  I just think a #1 seed deserves better.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, Heinz 57 is no good with beef ramen noodles, but A1 sauce is A-ok!

You Can’t See Me

Well, I’ve made it back from Vegas physically.  I’m slowly coming back mentally as well.  My bracket that I filled out never seemed to take off the ground.  I’ve done so badly that by Friday night’s games I was already at the point where I didn’t even have to see a score and wonder if I picked that team.  I will ask you to re-read the blog previous to this one and see which teams I said to watch out for.  2 of those 3 pulled first round upsets, and you’re darn right I’m gonna toot my own horn.  Those are the things that are important and that I feel you need to hear from me.

Three people in the Bous Theory Tourney Challenge have stepped up to an early lead:

Jon Hankenhoff

Matt Helwig

Derek Allen

There’s a pretty solid cluster in 4th and 5th place, sitting 40 and 50 points behind the leader respectively.  58.8% of the Bous Theory Challenge think that Pitt or Louisville will win the National Championship.  As you can probably see, this leaves the door wide open as we go along, because 58.8% of those folks are wrong.

I’m laying low in 16th, just where I want to be before this weekend.  You’d almost think I was wearing Uncle Jun glasses or something.

Vegas Vacation

Well folks, I’m heading out to Tark’s turf in Vegas for the long weekend. I’m disappointed in the number of teams entered into the Bous Theory challenge. For those of you that have entered, I look forward to some duals in the next 3 weeks.

If you haven’t entered, remember it’s free, and it’s a group with some legends mixed in there. Take your shot at beating a legend.

Other than that, I’m out. Wish I could blog more this week, but like I said, I’m going to Vegas.

Watch out for Cleveland State, Dayton, and Portland State this weekend. Talk to you when I get back.
