Echoes of ‘I Voted For It Before I Voted Against It….’

Check this about-face from Rep. Dan Burton.

Burton announced Friday that he will refuse the cost of living pay raise approved for members of Congress in 2008.

His announcement comes in the same week he cast a vote that allowed the automatic pay raise to take effect without a recorded vote by House members.

Burton explained his decision in a statement Friday he thinks there should be an up-or-down vote on the measure, but that he objected to the procedural move Democrats were using to get it.

Sounds an awful lot like the “I voted for it before I voted against it” line from a former Democrat presidential nominee, one that Republicans mocked unmercifully, doesn’t it?

Burton faces what will likely be a very difficult primary challenge next spring from former Marion County Coroner John McGoff.

Another Lawmaker Resigns

Another state lawmaker from northern Indiana has decided to leave his seat early.

State Rep. Duane Cheney of Portage submitted his resignation Wednesday, saying he has so much going on in his life and that his mother has just entered hospice care.

Cheney’s resignation comes just days after fellow northern Indiana Dem. Bob Kuzman stepped down to become a lobbyist.

He’s the fourth lawmakers to leave since the session ended, and it’s a better than even bet that we’ll see even more over the next few weeks.
