Give Me, and Taxpayers, a Break!
How silly is it that the Marion County Auditor is sending out 8 cent rebate checks to property taxpayers?
I’m not blaming Billie Breaux one bit for this. The legislature, in its all-consuming mania for getting all the credit for property tax relief, has dictated every aspect of this process, right down to the wording and the size of the type in the letter that accompanies the checks.
But couldn’t our crack lawmakers have included the same language that’s in the income tax law, that the state doesn’t have to issue any refund, nor do taxpayers have to pay any obligation, when it’s less than a dollar?
So we have the silliness of county government spending more than five times the amount of the rebate just on the stamp to mail the check.

And then there’s the cost of paper and printing the check, not to mention that some people would have to pay to cash it. And of course, there’s the legislative time that could have been spent on something important like jobs or figuring out how we’re all going to get around when gas reaches seven plus bucks a gallon!
The story about the problems with rebate checks should hit the headlines soon.
I received a sizable rebate check in the mail even though the accompany letter stated that I should not be receiving a rebate check since they will be sending a check to my mortgage company to apply against my mortgage escrow account.
I suspect thousands of taxpayers will cash there rebate checks only to get a collection letter later that requests they pay it back.
The politicians are just hoping the bad news waits until after the election.
