Free God!
We can all sleep easy tonight knowing that we can legally snag free “In God We Trust” license plates, at least according to the Indiana Court of Appeals:
The Indiana Court of Appeals issued a ruling Monday that affirmed Indiana’s “In God We Trust” plates are constitutional.
The appeals court upheld an earlier trial court judgment against the ACLU of Indiana, which claimed that motorists who ask for God plates get special treatment because they don’t have to pay a $15 administrative fee charged for specialty plates.
In its decision, the appeals court affirmed that Indiana offers two alternatives to standard license plates and that the fee structure for those plates is “uniformly applicable to all similarly situated license plates.”
Something tells me this isn’t over yet.
A word of preemption for all the wingnuts who may flock to this thread: I’m not sayin’ you can’t have God on yer car. I just think you just need to pay for Him so the rest of us don’t have to.

So you have no problem if someone wants the “Lincolns boyhood home” license plate with no fee?
Or are you saying that all alternative plates should have a fee associated?
All but the standard plate should have a fee associated with them.
I pay the extra $35 each year for my IU plate because I’m an IU grad, and I want to support the school.
You want to support your cause? Shell out a few bucks. Otherwise, stick with the true, free and boring blue.
I don’t disagree with you on this Jen…I have the in god we trust plate, but I believe we should have to pay for it
Absolutely it should have a fee attached … and if we can’t decide who it should go to, then how about dividing it up amongst the townships (or preferably counties) for poor relief. Seems a worthy cause in this economic environment and one in which we could all agree and God would approve.
TDW, er, Jen:
Why would you label anyone who is unopposed to this plate or the court’s ruling a “wingnut?” People can have differing views without being cast as part of some lunatic fringe.
Just a thought.
“In (peel off) We Trust” is what we need; Anyone of any religious background, can insert whatever there hearts desire. That way, whether fee-driven or not, no “establishment” of religion is being favored.
If your a Dawkins fanatic, you could even put reason.
Because this plate was passed to appeal to the far right fringe which are affectionately referred to as “wingnuts”. After all, what other reason for a FREE plate dedicated to God? Have we forgotten that there are people in this country who don’t worship as we do? How about a free plate for Buddha or Mohammed? Our state issued license plate should be issue-free. All others, including God, pay cash!
IndyNana: That “far right fringe” is far more mainstream than you care to admit.
“IndyNana: That “far right fringe” is far more mainstream than you care to admit.”
Yeah, and if you don’t believe B Squared, just ask Vice President Sarah Palin.
Oh, wait…
Every time I write about this topic, some wingnut hauls off and accuses me of being a godless liberal.
I figure a preemptive defense is easier than dealing with an after-the-fact assault.
I personally don’t care what you want to put on your license plate, but don’t ask me to subsidize it.
I am a Republican and feel we have more issues in our country then if someone has to pay fee for a plate….but since we are talking about it…I feel I need to go into the BMV and pay an extra 35.00 for my plate just because! I don’t have a problem with. I am not one to shove my beliefs down anyones throat….and I don’t believe my plate does that…Well let the attacks begin on me as being a Republican agreeing with a Democrat!!!
