Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh did stand-ups and sit-downs with broadcast and print reporters after a breakfast this morning at which he was the featured speaker.
Here are a few thoughts he shared with the media:
On being a veepstakes finalist: “If I had to do it all over again I’d be willing to do it all over again.”
On politics generally: “If you do the right thing at the moment, the politics of the future does tend to take care of itself. If you’re dong the wrong thing because of some calculation about the future, that’s a certain path to disaster.”
On running again in 2010: “I would assume so. At this moment, I’m not giving that a whole lot of thought.”
On his youthful appearance: “If only I’d have had as much gray hair as Joe [Biden], maybe it would have made a difference.”
On what he’ll do to help Obama win: “I suspect the best place I can help him is in Indiana…hopefully Hoosiers have a level of trust and confidence in me.”
On why Indiana is competitive: Bayh said it’s a combination of Obama’s “ability to inspire and represent change” and the fact that “there are a whole lot of more conservative independents and moderate Republicans who just can’t take it any more.”
On the veepstakes vetting process: Bayh said the strangest question he was asked was whether he’d ever been treated for depression. He told the vetting team that he’s never taken an medications for depression and has never seen a psychologist or psychiatrist for depression, “but if you guys don’t hurry up and make this decision, I might actually be depressed.”
Barack Obama has picked Delaware Senator Joe Biden to be his running mate.
Here’s U.S. senator Dick lugar’s reaction, “I congratulate Senator Barack Obama on his selection of my friend, Senator Joe Biden, to be his vice-presidential running mate. I have enjoyed for many years the opportunity to work with Joe Biden to bring strong bipartisan support to United States foreign policy.
“I share the disappointment of many Hoosiers that my partner in the Senate, Evan Bayh, was not selected on this occasion, but I believe he will continue to have widespread support for higher office during many years ahead.”
Lugar made his statement while en route to Tbilisi, Georgia.
I’m off to cover the event. It will be a long, fun day, for a politcal junkie like me.
One credible cable news network is reporting that Evan Bayh and Tim Kaine are out of the VP stakes and the text message announcement will come tomorrow at 10am.
Radio talk show host Alan Colmes is tracking a plane from Midway airport in Chicago to New Castle, Deleware. (Joe Biden lives there.)
I am in Springfield, IL (my other home) tonight washing clothes and getting ready to go the Obama rally tomorrow.
This now officially ridiculous.
I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but let’s not make too much of the mysterious Obama goings-on that may or may not be happening in Indianapolis on Saturday.
Could it be the Democratic presidential candidate coming here to tap U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh as his running mate?
Absolutely. And I hope that’s the case. In fact, the past two nights, I’ve been jolted out of sleep by all-too-realistic dreams that Bayh will be the pick.
However, in case it’s escaped your notice, Indiana is conveniently located between Illinois, Obama’s home state where he’s having a big rally at noon on Saturday, and Ohio, arguably the swingiest state in the nation.
So, while it’s all well and good to imagine that this will be the unveiling of Obama-Bayh ‘08, it could just be one of many campaign stops in states where Obama is spending beaucoup bucks trying to pick up electoral votes.
UPDATE: Is this for real? The campaign says no, but other mainstream outlets say yes. You be the judge. I’m still pretty skeptical of the original source.
The Nashville Post (the who?) has set off a media frenzy by reporting that Barack Obama’s on-the-ground event staffers are en route from Denver to Indianapolis for a “major event” on Saturday.
Could it be the big announcement Hoosier Democrats are hoping to hear, or is it just one of many swing state campaign stops after the Springfield rally?
Also, is this a leak in the airtight Obama machine, or is this something that’s been leaked on purpose?
Is it even true?
