Still Waiting…

My phone makes a text message noise.

I check, but it’s just a friend inquiring about getting together soon.

I wait another 30 minutes and then wonder if maybe I forgot to turn the volume up on the alerts after the baby’s nap.

Still nothing.

Barack Obama, I am waiting for you. I want to know your pick for VP, and I want it to be EB. Evan Bayh, that is.

The suspense is killing me — and my work ethic. Even the baby has grown nervous as we sit here glued to CNN, surfing the Internet for silly tidbits of information from Washington.

I know this will all be over in the next few days, and then we can focus on the election in November, but for the time being, the wanting to know is driving me crazy.

Ooooh, gotta run. I think I just heard another text come in.

Bayhwatch

I’m keeping an eye on the Barack Obama campaign today.  They’re expected to announce Barack’s VP in the next couple of days.  John McCain reportedly will announce his on Aug. 29.

A lot of people around this state are looking at Senator Evan Bayh.  I tend to lean more towards Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware.  I leaned more towards Bayh prior to the conflict between Russian and Georgia and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf being run out of Islamabad on a rail.  Both events highlight the need to have someone with strong foreign policy credentials under his belt.  Biden fits that better than Bayh.

In addition, by picking Bayh Democrats would have to spend a lot more money in Indiana to ensure that Jill Long Thompson becomes Governor.  Because if Bayh goes to the Washington his seat becomes vacant and whoever is Governor gets to pick his replacement.  I can see Democrats spending money to make Indiana competitive, but not that much money.

Although if Barack really wanted someone with the right mix of foreign and domestic experience, he would have picked New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.  Richardson is a former U.N. Ambassador, Secretary of Energy and Congressman.  The only negative against him is that he is Hispanic and having a Black and a Hispanic at the top of the ticket might be too much change for some people.

Enjoy the show.

Food For Thought: Website Suggests Obama-Bayh Ticket

I’m also heading out of town, but here’s a nugget you can chew on for the rest of the day…

ABCnews.com just posted this very veepy blog entry:

ABC News’ Matt Jaffe and Rick Klein report: Type ObamaBayh08.com into your web browser. Where do you think it’ll take you? Go ahead, do it.

Bet you didn’t expect to suddenly be staring at the Democratic National Committee’s official website.

Hmm. What about other potential running mates? Let’s try ObamaKaine08.com. Nope, doesn’t take you to the DNC site.

Maybe ObamaBiden08.com? Nothing doing.

ObamaSebelius08.com? Strike three.

So, in the midst of the current vice-presidential speculation, is it possible that we may have just stumbled upon a clue that Barack Obama’s eventual Democratic running mate in 2008 will be none other than Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh?

Hot Button: Bayh’s Appeal

(Watch Jennifer’s Hot Button)

When Evan Bayh was elected Governor of Indiana, I was more interested in Barbie dolls than politics.

Had I been a little older, I might have had my first crush on him, what with his youthful good looks and charm.

Two decades have passed, and Bayh remains good-looking and charming. He traded in his gubernatorial hat to become a United States Senator, and now he reportedly sits at the top of a short list to become Barack Obama’s running mate.

The remarkable thing about Evan Bayh - and his Senate colleague, Republican Richard Lugar - is that they have transcended party lines to earn respect from voters on both sides of the aisle.

Dont get me wrong. Evan Bayh still sits at the helm of the Democratic Party in this state, but that’s the kind of inside baseball regular folks don’t care about.

What speaks volumes is that while other politicians have seen their approval ratings wax and wane, Bayh and Lugar remain consistently beloved.

Perhaps that’s why Obama is eyeing one for vice president while using the other in a new ad talking about nuclear weapons.

Well know soon enough whether Bayh will be part of the national ticket. In the mean time, this Indiana Democrat will be saying a few extra prayers that our favorite son finally gets his day.

Et tu, Josephus?

When Indiana superdelegate Joe Andrew entered Obama state headquarters yesterday to change sides in the Presidential race, he was carrying more knives than Brutus entering the Forum. One, to stab Hillary Clinton, to whom he’d already pledged his convention vote. A second, for Bill Clinton, who had made him Democratic National Chairman. And a third, for close Clinton ally Evan Bayh. That pretty much takes care of Andrew’s list of political benefactors.

Andrew says he’s been “inspired” by Barack Obama. He says it’s time to rise above the Old Politics and unite people and that he sees Obama as someone who can do that. He even threw in a mea culpa confessing to being a practitioner of the Old Politics throughout his own career. (Really?) But isn’t this classic Old Politics, jumping off what you perceive as a sinking ship and throwing in your lot with the people you think are going to win?

Andrew says the long nomination fight is hurting the Democratic Party and needs to be brought to a halt. Presumably that includes putting an end to criticism of the other side. But then he turned around and engaged in more Old Politics by sticking another knife in Hillary, calling her a panderer.

After he praised Obama for not pandering on the gasoline tax issue and then ripped the Clinton position, I asked him if Clinton had pandered. His response, “No question about it.” He even threw her in with John McCain. How is that uniting the party?

If Obama wins the nomination, Andrew will probably be sitting pretty. But if Clinton wins, he will probably go to the top of the persona non grata list.
