Shaking things up

I hope all of you had a safe Memorial Day weekend.  I spent part of my holiday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  I was part of our marathon newscast that we air every race day morning.  Once again, I had the pleasure of interviewing celebrities on the red carpet.  I usually don’t get too ga-ga over celebrities.  After all, they’re people just like the rest of us.  They just happen to make more money for one movie or television series than most of us will make in a life-time.

The funniest part of the entire morning centered around my handshake.  First, I shook hands with Dr. McSteamy (aka Eric Dane) from Grey’s Anatomy.  He is such a nice, and yes handsome, man.  The first thing he commented on was my firm handshake.  It’s nice to know that even Dr. McSteamy couldn’t make my handshake wilt.  Five minutes later, John Oates of Hall and Oates fame commented on my handshake.  At this point, I’m starting to think maybe my handshake is a bit over the top.  Finally, Ian Ziering from Dancing with the Stars agrees to an interview with me.  I shake his hand and he immediately says, “Wow… now that’s a handshake.”  At this point, I’m about to lose it.

I guess I owe my firm shake to my parents.  I remember my mom and dad commenting about people with a limp handshake and what it says about their character.  I was taught that when you meet someone, you look them straight in the eyes and give them a nice, firm handshake.

So, if our paths should ever cross, please feel free to come over and shake my hand.  I promise not to be too firm.  Then again, those lessons I learned from my parents are hard to shake.
