This morning I had the pleasure of interviewing a woman who is just hours away from becoming a U-S citizen.

Janet Wong moved to America some 30 years ago, when her family left the political unrest in their homeland of Jamaica.  She decided the time was right to take the oath of citizenship and she is very excited.  Janet told me she loves everything about America, especially all of the freedom we enjoy.  She even told me how she thinks Americans are fun.  Well, it was fun to talk to Janet and I think she was the perfect guest for us as we get ready to celebrate the 4th of July.  It was good, I think, for all of us to be reminded how blessed we are to be citizens of the United States.

My kids really enjoy waving their flags.  My husband and I like the fact that it gives us an opportunity to teach the kids about patriotism.  My boys love to ask questions like… why are the stripes red and and white… and what do the stars mean?  My husband keeps an especially watchful eye on how the kids handle the flag.  We have a huge flag outside our home.

I am excited that I’m off tomorrow.  Like many Americans, I look forward to enjoying great food and fireworks.  I also, however, plan to use the day to teach the kids about the importance of the day.  We’re not just celebrating the fact that mommy and daddy have the day off.  We’re celebrating our founding fathers and how they fought for our freedoms.  And let’s not forget about Betsy Ross and all of the wonderful mothers in our country’s history.  May God continue to bless America.  I hope all of you have a happy and safe 4th of July holiday!
