There have been several discussions about deer hunting and rifles on this blog lately so I thought I would list the types of rifles that can be used to deer hunt in Indiana.

According to the DNR you can use the following:

Rifles with pistol cartridges:

Rifles must fire a cartridge of .357 – inch diameter or larger; have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches.

-These rifle cartridges can only be used during deer firearms season.

You can see the list of legal cartridges at:

I think  rifle hunting in Indiana Deer Firearms Season was introduced in 2007.  I was talking to a DNR officer at the Deer and Turkey Expo and he said it was a way to get more young hunters interested in hunting.
