The blogger making Sushi at home! With the soggy weekend weather (at least through late Saturday afternoon) I decided to make it a “Sushi-Saturday” at my house.

I became a big sushi fan several years ago when my wife ordered some California rolls on our honeymoon. I had always been interested in the Japanese food, but had never tried it. I even tried  some raw fish sushi, too. I didn’t think it was too bad.

A few years later, a friend visiting town took me out to a sushi place for lunch and ordered up a whole menu for us. It was great cause he taught me how to eat sushi and encouraged me to try a bunch of different combinations. Needless to say, once I really understood sushi (translated: tried it) and learned how to eat it and enjoy it, I was hooked.

I enjoyed it so much, for Christmas a couple years ago, my wife bought me a sushi cookbook and my very own sushi knife! Whoo-hooo!

I’ve learned some basics on how to cook the rice, add the ingredients (I’m a big fan of spicy tuna) and I’ve learned how to roll my very own seaweed rolls.

My sushi making skills are admittedly limited. No sushi chefs are going to be threatened by my abilities. Sushi takes a little while to make, but it is a fun lunch or dinner. And while my kids won’t eat sushi…they do enjoy nibbling on the rice. And they to like to help Dad put all the ingredients (cucumbers, tuna, avocados etc ) together to make sushi rolls.

I’ve found closet sushi fans at work and through friends.

It’s funny, I’ve found sushi is one of those types of food that once you try it, if you like it, you’re likely to LOVE it.

For most of us, like what happened to me, you just need a “sushi-mentor” to get you started!

I’m available!

BTW, hope you had a safe and dry weekend. For all our friends in the southern counties dealing with the devastating flood issues, our thoughts are with you.
