Although we have yet to see any accumulating snow, don’t give up yet!
The latest computer models point toward 3 to 5 inches of snow in the metro area by morning.
Heavier snow of 6 inches or more is still possible west and northwest of Indianapolis.
Drier air in the lowest levels of the atmosphere has slowed the development of snow. As the air saturates overnight, the coverage and intensity of the snow will increase.
Good Morning Indiana will start on RTV6 at 4:30 am. We will have live reports detailing conditions across Central Indiana.
A Winter Storm Warning continues for Central Indiana through the day on Friday.
I will update my blog again shortly because I am expecting new model information that will be valuable in my forecast.
Trueview estimates for snow potential northwest of Indy have diminished. Snowfall estimates along a Terre Haute to Kokomo line are now running about 5″ to 6″.
The trend continues for sleet and freezing rain to mix with snow southeast of Indy and limit accumulating snow in that region.
Right now, Trueview estimates 2″ to 3″ along a Bloomington to Shelbyville line.
Light snow is developing. The light snow stretches from Terre Haute to Lafayette. This is the leading edge of a big push of moisture from the south.
Snow should become more widespread after 7pm. As much as three inches of accumulation is possible by midnight.
Total snowfall may reach 6″ to 10″ northwest of a line from Terre Haute to Indy and Anderson. The largest snow amounts ( 8-10″) should be along and west of a Terre Haute to Kokomo line by morning.
Sleet and freezing rain will complicate the forecast southeast of Indy. The mixed precipitation will also limit snowfall accumulation. My confidence in snowfall amounts southeast of Indy is low. In general 2 to 5″ of snow is possible with some spots getting a .25″ of ice accumulation.
Although snow has appeared on radar most of the day, it has not been reaching the ground.
That is changing now. Our weather watcher in Rockville reported light snow just a few minutes ago. Bloomington is reporting mixed precipitation with a temperature of 30 degrees.
Occasional flurries or light snow will spread northeast through the afternoon.
Actually, I don’t know how patiently I’m waiting on the snow’s arrival. The pace of this storm will be quite different from Tuesday night.
A WINTER STORM WARNING is in effect from 7pm tonight to 7pm Friday night. The period of heaviest snow should fall between midnight and 9am.
Let me try to draw a line in the snow. Northwest of a line from Sullivan to Indy and Anderson, snowfall of more than 6″ is possible. Less snow should accumulate southeast of that line.
Here’s another line to draw. The heaviest snow looks like it will fall northwest of a line from Terre Haute to Kokomo. In simple terms, more snow will fall northwest of Indy and less will fall to the southeast.
Our Trueview model is predicting a quick increase in snow totals as you move from Indianapolis to the northwest:
Brownsburg: 6.0″
Crawfordsville: 6.0″
Lafayette: 9.0″
Fowler: 12.0″
