We almost set a March record for lack of snow.
Until Sunday, not even a trace of snow had been recorded in Indianapolis. However, snow showers were common on Sunday as colder air swept into the state.
As we look to warmer days ahead, here are a few dates to keep in mind:
AVERAGE DATE LAST SNOWFALL: March 30th
LATEST DATE OF SNOWFALL: May 8, 1923
AVERAGE DATE LAST FREEZE: April 22nd
LATEST DATE OF LAST FREEZE: May 27th, 1961

The map above is from the Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma.
They have identified a broad region where severe thunderstorms are possible Saturday.
Indiana is included in this large area that stretches from southern lower Michigan to the Gulf Coast and Mid Atlantic.
Severe thunderstorms over Indiana will likely depend on how far north warm, moist air reaches into the state.

This has been a mild march!
So far this month, temperatures have averaged about 6 degrees above average.
For the sixth time this month, highs reached 70 degrees or more yesterday. The warmest day of the month was March 7th. The high temp reached 76 degrees.
Rainfall has been below average. Despite last night’s rainfall, we are about 2 inches below average for the month.

Here’s the outlook beyond our current 7Day Forecast.
This is the 6 to 10 Day outlook form the Climate Prediction Center.

Now that spring is here you might be wondering if we are done with snow.
Good question. There is no snow in the 7Day Forecast. However, that doesn’t mean we are done for the season. We average just under a half inch of snow during the month of April.
Last March, our last measurable snowfall happened on March 7th.
For the record, the latest snowfall for Indianapolis fell on May 8th, 1923!
