Question for You?

What is the real shape of a falling raindrop?

A. Tear-Shaped

B. Sperical

C. Flat on Bottom & Round on Top

The correct answer depends on the size of the raindrop.

First, rain drops are not tear-shaped.

Raindrops less than 2 mm in diameter are nearly spherical.

Raindrops with diameters exceeding 2 mm are flat on the bottom and round on top. They look like an open parachute or a falling hamburger bun!

Moving on Up…

We are moving up the list of wettest April’s on record!

We are now 8th on the list. Rainfall in Indianapolis for the month is 6.87″. That’s the most rain in April since 1996.

April 1886 is number one on the list with 8.60″ of rain.

We may move up a few more spots Thursday as thunderstorms move through the state ahead of a cold front.

Moving Closer…

After more heavy rainfall last night, we are moving closer to cracking the top ten for wettest April’s on record.

Just under 6 inches of rain has been recorded in Indianapolis this month. An additional half inch of rainfall would push this month’s rainfall into the top ten wettest.

Rainfall was especially heavy in Hendricks County:

STILESVILLE: 1.89″

PLAINFIELD: 1.50″

AVON: 1.50″

BROWNSBURG: 1.31″

If you are keeping track of our string of days in the 80s, add another day to the list.

High temperatures are soaring into the lower 80s ahead of thunderstorms and a cold front in Illinois.

The streak of July-like temperatures will end Tuesday. A cold front will generate thunderstorms and bring cooler temperatures back to the state.

Here’s a look at our July-like stretch:

Friday, April 24th:  84 degrees

Saturday, April 25th: 85 degrees

Sunday, April 26th: 84 degrees

Today: ???

Are you Counting?

calculator

You honestly don’t need a calculator for this.

You can count on one hand the longest stretch of dry weather this month. Our longest stretch of days without rain has been three days!

I’m not positive we will make it through this evening and tonight without rain. As warmer air returns, isolated thunderstorms are possible along the warm front.

For the record, the first seven days of March were dry.

Here’s a little bit of weather trivia from the National Weather Service office in Indianapolis:

Most consecutive days without measurable precipitation: 39, from August 14-September 22 1908
