Winds of Change…

wind

Strong winds will continue tonight.

Deep low pressure over the Great Lakes and high pressure in the Central Plains are creating the windy conditions. There is a strong pressure gradient between the low and high. As the low moves slowly east the winds will gradually diminish. Gusts over 30 mph are still expected tonight.

Here are some peak wind gusts so far today:

Indianapolis: 47 mph

Terre Haute: 43 mph

Eagle Creek: 41 mph

Muncie: 39 mph

Lafayette: 37 mph

Temperature Talk…

Let’s talk temperatures!

Early next week, the feel of fall will arrive. High temperatures will be in the 60s. Morning lows will drop into the 40s. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings will likely be the coolest.

Since we have our eye on the thermometer, I though I would share some temperature statistics for Indianapolis. The information is from the National Weather Service office in Indy:

Highest Temperature ever recorded: 107 on July 25, 1934
Lowest Temperature ever recorded: -27 on January 19, 1994
Greatest temperature change during a calendar day: 58 degrees on January 12, 1916
The high was 68 degrees while the low was 10 degrees.

Average First Freeze Date: October 16
Average Last Freeze Date: April 22
Earliest First Freeze Date on Record: September 30, 1899
Latest Last Freeze Date on Record: May 27, 1961

Hello Fall!

orbit

Fall is here!

I’m serious. It may not feel like it, but a new season has arrived. The Autumnal Equinox officially arrives at 5:18 pm EDT. The sun is directly above the equator at this time.

As Paul Harvey would say, you know the rest of the story. Less direct sunlight and shorter daylight hours will lead to cooler temperatures.

Eventually.

Right now, we have a warm, humid air mass over the state. High temps will continue above average into the first part of the weekend. In the humidity, scattered thunderstorms can be expected as well.
