Old House, New Ideas

Hey everyone!  First of all, thanks to those of you who are bothering to read these! As I understand, it’s not always possible to leave a comment right now because of a technical glitch, but I’ll just assume that someone out there is reading from time to time…

TEMPTATION

I put together a piece for tonight’s 7pm news touring one of the houses featured in the Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour Saturday.  I was absolutely blown away by the beauty of this home, and the artistry that went into every detail.  I’ve always been a HUGE sucker for older homes - my husband and I have lived in three pre-1930’s bungalows - and I can’t resist the classic lines of the Arts and Crafts era.  Walking into Tom Evaniew’s home made me wish - for a moment - we were once again in a home from that era, with all that gorgeous woodwork. He says a home is like a story - every family that lives in it adds to that story.  I liked that.

Anyway, our new home here in Indy is anything but Craftsman - it was built in ‘61. It has plenty of unique features and most importantly a big yard for our huge dog, and a floor plan that really works for our family.

But after touring the gorgeous house in Broad Ripple, I found myself thinking…. could walnut crown moulding work somehow in our 60’s house?   What if we….. and then we could try to….. or if you just knocked out this one wall and changed the fireplace….

I can feel my husband and my dad cringe.  Dad is always the one who helps execute my brilliant home renovation ideas. Most of the time we end up much deeper in work than I expected.  At the last house we overhauled the kitchen - and accidentally added a few colorful words to my son’s vocabulary.

My husband, Ian, knows how I get when I’m on a roll.  Once I get the vision, there’s almost no stopping me until the project is DONE.  I become a mad scientist.

There is one problem:  it takes time, talent, and money to pull off these projects.

So it is probably safer for me to stay away from historic home tours. For now.

But once we’re really settled in, maybe, just maybe, I can figure out a way to bring just a little touch of that earthy arts-and-crafts feel into our very-Brady floorplan!

Have a great weeknd!

Technical Problems

They happen to everyone. Even those of us in the broadcast industry.

We’ve received several e-mails about our comments feature not working properly.

We are working to find the cause of this problem and come up with a solution. Until then, our comments are closed. Sorry.

We will let you know as soon as there is a fix. Thanks for your patience.

Hitting the Jackpot

I did a story on the Hoosier Lottery Wednesday night.  It reached a record 48 million dollars.  Of course, I bought a couple of tickets.  And THAT got me thinking about what I would do if I won.  I’m sure we’ve all asked that question at one time or another.

I came up with a few qick answers.

First, I’d tithe.  I know it’s lottery money but somehow I don’t see a ministry turning down that kind of money.

Second, I’d take care of family members in need.  (Naturally, there would be some  people CLAIMING to be family.  You know how that goes.  “I’m your Uncle Joe’s great- grandfather’s second cousin on his step fathers side.”

Hmm.  I’d take a cruise… Two weeks with my wife and daughter.. and dog (Heck, I can afford to pay extra for the pooch.)

Got to get some clothes.  Not just for my wife either.  I love clothes!!

Of course the first answer everyone seems to give is they’d quit there job.  Now I would NEVER do that.   Forget about it.

But I sure would be on vacation for a long, long, long time. :-)  I’m just curious about what you may do with the money.  I’d love to hear from you.

Ah, one more thing, just in case the boss is reading this.  I didn’t win, so that vacation will just have to wait.

Kid-friendly must-sees

Indy is so much fun to explore.  I’ve been here many times as a guest, but it’s much more fun as a permanent citizen!

We Shepherds are already regulars at the Children’s Museum (where we can never seem to get them out of the train and dinosaur area…) and we LOVED LOVED LOVED Conner Prairie this weekend.

I know we’ll be hitting the zoo soon - but I’d love to hear some of your suggestions on great kid-friendly attractions not too far from Indy.

Ian and I are also dying to find some places to go out to eat where people won’t look at you funny if someone’s mac-n-cheese ends up in their hair.

As long as it’s a place where Clara and her two “babies” (dolls she drags everywhere) are welcome, she’ll eat just about anything.  Cal’s favorite meal lately is meatloaf - go figure.  But it’d be great to find a place where there’s semi-interesting adult food along with chicken fingers and fries.

Looking forward to hearing from some of you!
