Now that Dungy is returning…
Whew. I was kind of nervous about Tony Dungy. I thought that the warm termperatures of Tampa, not to mention the relocation of his family, would be enough to lure him away from the Colts. However, now that he has decided to stay, it got me thinking about next season.
First, let me admit that I am your typical Monday morning quarterback. I have all of the answers after the fact. Second, let me also say that while I watch professional football with passion, I know very little about exotic defenses and creative, every-changing offenses. But please hear me out because I have some advice that may help the Colts win it all (or at least get to the Big Game) next season.
I believe that, to an extent, the Colts are the victims of their own success. They clinch so much so fast, year after year, that inevitably they always relax and rest a couple of games at the very end of the season. Then they try to “recapture the magic” of the regular season and they usually look out of sync, tired, and some have even said “soft.” They should, I believe, play with the same sort of intensity that brings them so many wins during the regular season.
Dare I say they should take a look at our nemesis, the Patriots. This is a team that stays focused ALL the time and never takes its foot off the pedal. If an opponent is down, I wouldn’t put it past the Patriots to give them a swift kick, just because they can. It’s kind of mean. It makes you angry. And that’s my point. I think the Colts need a little more edge, swagger, bravado.
Don’t get me wrong, the Colts, in my opinion, are the classiest team in the NFL. And I’m certainly not advocating they compromise their integrity. No amount of winning is worth that. But that doesn’t they can’t play a little more smash-mouth football the ENTIRE season.
Like I wrote before, I don’t know about all of the intricacies of the game. And Coach Dungy doesn’t need my advice. I’m just a Monday morning quarterback who hates to lose. But that doesn’t mean I’m not on to something. What do you think?

Hi Todd,
I totally agree with you. Maybe the resting of the starters throws things out of sync for the team.
We do have a great team here, and one to be proud of, but we should also be in the Super Bowl this year.Maybe the coaches will rethink resting the starters next season.
Ken
I was surprised Coach Dungy decided to stay as well. And I agree with you…as much as we all growl about the Patriots, it’s hard to discount their focus and passion.
But I’m starting to think the Giants may, just may have a shot at taking them out. To quote “The Blues Brothers,” the Giants seem to be “on a mission from God.”
Paul
Paul,
Maybe the Giants are on “a mission from God.” But those Patriots sure look tough. The best thing about the Giants is that they match up well against the Patriots between the ears.. which is most important.
Ken,
I can only hope that after we clinch something next year (and you know it will be over) we maintain the focus and intensity. I’m tired of the argument “what if they get hurt?” My answer. What if the momentum help them win? I’d rahter roll the dice and take my chances.
I cannot really say anything bad about the colts.I am a Texan by birth, that moved here a little over 7 years ago from Alabama.I just know that when i saw the colts play here,my passion for football was once again ignited.I hope they take the off season to rest up,then focus once again on thier game. They can overcome even the patriots as we all have seen. This is a great team, and i am glad i have made the choice to stay in this great state, and have them as a team.
James,
I agree the Colts are a great team. I also don’t believe I’m actually saying anything bad. It’s just that I’m trying to understand why, with the exception of last year, this team fizzles in the playoffs. Every year. There is no way they should have lost to a depleted Chargers team - AT HOME at that.
They seemed out of sync and lacked a little focus in my opinion. I just believe if they maintain their intensity for 60 mninutes of every 16 regular season games, it will translate to greater success in the playoffs.
Granted, I’ve never coached a football team. As a sports enthusiast and Colts fan, I’m just giving my Monday morning quarterback opinion.
Thanks for sending yours.
