Sampson’s Exit
What a strange day it has been.
The news we waited for all day finally was confirmed at 9pm: IU basketball coach Kelvin Sampson resigned in the wake of alleged NCAA recruiting violations, accepting a $750,000 settlement. Athletic Director Rick Greenspan says the deal is in the best interest of Indiana basketball and the University.
There is undoubtedly debate taking place in bars, kitchens, dorm rooms, and offices all over Indiana and the US for that matter, on whether IU did the right thing, why Sampson made the choices he did, and what this will mean for Hoosier basketball. I certainly wonder what this must be like for the players, in the middle of a successful season, keeping their heads high and their sense of “team” intact without their coach.
Todd and I welcome your thoughts.

There was a huge hub-bub when he was hired. Many people thought that he was worthy of a second chance, and perhaps we all are. I guess what really bugs me about this is you can break the rules, and get P-A-I-D for doing so.
Seriously, I have a college education, work hard, and I am 30 yrs old. I doubt I will ever earn $750,000 in any ten (10) year period of my life, heck at my present salary I would not make that in a lifetime. Yet, this man get that dough for breaking regulations and pestering 15-17 year olds while they should be doing homework (or atleast being kids). UGH!!!!
Big Tony -
The money in college athletics does tend to blow one away, doesn’t it? Of course, I will grant that coaches have skills and expertise that most of us couldn’t touch, and a greart deal is brought in to Universities by these programs. It’s just in such a different league than regular working folks that it’s hard to relate to.
I have heard quite a few people like yourself joking about what THEY could do to get “let go” in such a lucrative way.
Thanks for the comment.

It is apalling that the universities raise tuition yet now we are seeing where the money goes. again for those of us who paid for our college education for years after graduation i have yet to make after 10 years out what Sampson is receiving to leave quietly. Why the reward is there nothing in his contract to adhere to NCAA rules? A poor relection of priorties of the administration.
I have yet to see where they proved that Kelvin Sampson lied. In fact it pretty evident that the University isn’t all that sure. Why would they buy him out so they could assure he would not sue IU? I sure looks very suspicious to me. That he would not appeal the decision. He would not bad mouth the University. They were afraid just maybe he was innocent in fact according to the law of the land he is innocent untill proven guilty. Where is the proof? I don’t care if it is published. This is what I think.
Sincerely

It is absolutely rediculous that IU hired this man knowing he was in trouble with the NCAA. He violates the rules again and receives $750,000. Where is the justice? Shame on Sampson and shame on IU! Look at the Pacers, nothing but thugs. Roger Clements may have used growth drugs. I am disgusted by all of it! Where are the Walter Paytons and Ernie Banks of the sports world???
