Do-it-yourself haircut and Theatre is fun!
Did any of you know that baby scissors can cut hair?
Guess how the Shepherds found out?
How long do you predict before her nonexistent bangs can pass as normal?
THEATRE ROCKS!
We finished the second weekend of Snow White at Beef and Boards and the audiences were awesome. I’ve never in my life seen so many awestruck little girls in princess dresses.
I was especially happy to see my late coworker Don Foss’s family at the show after I got them some
tickets! Here are Zach and Megan at right (my post-show hair had gotten a bit “wiggy” I’m afraid)
Megan’s one incredulous question for me - did you REALLY kiss the prince?? I love the collective EEEWWWW we’ve heard from little kids, especially the boys, at some of the performances. Priceless!
FINDING THAT MAGIC
I sort of worried when I committed to this 8-week run that I’d be drained and exhausted, but getting back on stage (after about a 4-year hiatus due to kids and career demands!) I realized that I’m actually drawing more energy than I’m expending somehow from this process! Yes, at the end of the second show Saturday, after a full week of newscasts and a long Friday of theatre in the morning, news at night, I was pretty beat, but I was smiling. I have to say, after some of the darker news in the world, it’s not so bad living in a magical, musical fairy tale for an hour.
There’s always been something magical that live theatre has done for my soul that nothing else quite can match. I wish everyone could find that one unique thing that does that for them, and find a way to carve a spot for it in their life.
It is good to be back.
A MONTH OF BIRTHDAYS
I have two October babies, Clara’s early in the month and Calvin late, so it seems like the birthday celebrations keep going. This weekend, I had lots of family in town to see the play, and we threw a mini b-day bash. They are officially spoiled so rotten they’re starting to stink.
Cal LOVES his new superman suit. Can you say - ABS OF STEEL?
He tried flying. Didn’t work for some reason. Probably the cape.
THE STORYTELLER
My Grandad (from central Illinois at far left in the photo as everyone sang happy b-day) and his wonderful wife Elaine made the trip over. Grandad managed to
mesmerize the kids with the stories he told to go along with the wooden gifts he’d made them. He is a retired minister and along with being a gifted carpenter, has always been an incredible storyteller. I’ll be lucky if I’ve inherited an ounce of his talent in that department. It was really good to see them and especially to see my kids caught up in his spell, even just for a moment.
I know my “Greatest Auntie Corky ” (second from right) who also came for the show, took a bunch of photos so I’ll add them as soon as she sends them my way!
HD DIFFERENCE
Are any of you watching in HD? We just switched our cameras and system last week. Can you tell the
difference? I applaud all our engineers and technical staff who are working their tails off to get us looking as smooth as possible. I’ve become increasingly paranoid about my makeup and flyaways, worried that every little flaw looks 10 times clearer!
Thanks for checking in - see you on the air!

Trisha,
Assuming her bangs are COMPLETELY gone, I can say farely certainly it takes THREE MONTHS (!) to get them to a normal length. Not that I have been through this recently.
My dear daughter decided her long hair was in the way, all the while refusing a barette or pony tail back in July. I was cooking dinner and turned around to what was clearly a lack of hair. I had to look away. My hands were flour covered & I truly did not want to know how bad it was!
Eventually, I had to address it. She had taken her bangs off flush with the scalp. Thankfully, it wasn’t really that large of an area. It looked like a caulic - so we were quite lucky. That was around July 4th - and I just recently (about 2 weeks ago) realized that she looks like she has real bangs now.
Enjoy! Kids are so much fun - and those haircuts…I just have to say please do not assume that it only takes one time to learn the lesson. Well, at least mine took more than once!
Have a great Fall!
Michelle,
I’m hearing from SO many parents (including my own!) about kids who’ve done this. At least we’re not alone. Clara is refusing to wear headbands or hats, but at least she doesn’t really seem embarassed about her strange ‘do.
My mom is a 2nd grade school teacher and she tells me she used this story to teach her kids the vocabulary word of the day - “aghast.” I have to say that is pretty close to how I felt when I saw the wreckage!
I’m hoping by Christmas my little girl looks a little more like her old self. Thanks for writing!
Trish
OH MY GOODNESS! Trish, she still looks adorable! Those two have gotten so big since I last saw them! Snow White sounds like fun! We’re trying to convince our school play director to do Little Mermaid! He’s not gonna agree with us. EVER. Connor and I are doing drama classes together. It’s a blast! Tell everyone I say hi! Lots of love!

XOXO
Greatest Niece Trish:
Clara Corinne, with that angelic face, would be beautiful bald - like most Sterling babies are for the first couple years of their lives. Her bangs don’t look much different than mine did many years ago after grandma cut them.
I promise to send the photos tonight so you can share them with others on Monday. I’m still smiling each time I think about how much fun “Snow White” and the birthday parties were last weekend.
Hugs…..GAC xoxoxo
Delaney (my young cousin in Chicago) -
It’s good to hear that you and Connor are doing more acting! I can’t believe how much theatre helped me gain confidence as I was growing up, and how much fun I still have getting on stage. Please give everyone hugs from me, okay?!
Auntie Corky - you’re SO right about the bangs. I’ve seen all the photos to prove how overzealous Grandma used to be with the scissors on you girls.
I’m so glad you and Bob made it down - it turned into a great weekend.
I can’t wait to see your photos! (I promise to share a few on this blog)
We had another good performance this morning (in spite of one injured dwarf who performed like a trooper in his cast!) and I’m looking forward to a packed house tomorrow. Have a great weekend!
Love,
Trish
