This weekend is the Brandywine Creek Chapter’s NWTF 9th annual banquet. The doors open at 4:30 pm and dinner is served at 6:00 pm. Smokin’ Joes of Markleville is the caterer.

It should be a great evening of fun, while helping raise money for wild turkey and your hunting heritage.

CROSSBOW HUNTING ANYONE?

While hanging out at the 2010 Indiana Deer, Turkey, & Waterfowl Expo I noticed one product that is being pushed hard is the CROSSBOW.  Crossbow Hunting is still kind of new for Hoosier Hunters unless you had a  permit.  Currently, you can crossbow hunt for deer in the late archery season.

Experts say that crossbow hunting has been slow to spread across the country, but is really taking off now.    According to one salesman I spoke with you can get a good crossbow for $400-800.00.   I tested a crossbow at the Expo and it was really accurate from about 20 ft.   It will be interesting to see if the CROSSBOW becomes as popular as the MUZZLELOADER in Indiana???

Deer Reduction Numbers

Here is a press release about the STATE PARK DEER HUNT.

Another successful year for state park deer hunts

shea@rtv6blogs.com
Volunteer hunters helped the effort to restore habitat during the recent controlled hunts at 17 Indiana state parks, taking a total of 1,334 deer.

The controlled hunts took place Nov. 16 – 17 and Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 at Chain O’Lakes, Charlestown, Harmonie, Lincoln, Ouabache, Pokagon, Potato Creek, Prophetstown, Shades, Shakamak, Spring Mill, Tippecanoe River, Turkey Run, Versailles, Whitewater Memorial, Fort Harrison, and Clifty Falls.

Versailles had the highest number of deer taken in the special hunts with 202, followed by Potato Creek (186), Charlestown (133) and Tippecanoe River (119). To view a full report, see www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/files/sp-09DeerRMRR.pdf.

DNR biologists evaluate which parks require a deer reduction each year, based on the recovery of vegetation that deer eat and previous harvest information at each park. The state parks are home to many unique natural communities and rare plants. The controlled hunts help reduce browsing by deer to a level that helps ecosystems and associated vegetation recover.

“In spite of poor weather during the first reduction and expanses of standing corn adjacent to many parks, our effort in 2009 was successful in maintaining the comfortable trend we’ve seen in recent years,” said Mike Mycroft, chief of natural resources for the DNR Division of State Parks and Reservoirs. “Though hunters aren’t taking as many deer as they once were, that’s a good sign for the vegetation. These reductions are about managing habitat.”

Not all parks require reduction every year. Approximately one-third of the parks have achieved maintenance status since the program began and regularly take a year off from reductions.

Coyote Encounter

This morning as I was going out to get in my truck to go to work, I heard something, looked over, and there was a coyote about 20 yards from me. He could have cared less I was there. I shined him with my camera light and he slowly walked away. I have never had that happen. Usually, I’m hunting and they run up on me. Just thought I’d share this.

If you have any coyote stories please share!!!!

Rifles & Deer Hunting

There have been several discussions about deer hunting and rifles on this blog lately so I thought I would list the types of rifles that can be used to deer hunt in Indiana.

According to the DNR you can use the following:

Rifles with pistol cartridges:

Rifles must fire a cartridge of .357 – inch diameter or larger; have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches.

-These rifle cartridges can only be used during deer firearms season.

You can see the list of legal cartridges at:

http://www.in.gov/dnr/

I think  rifle hunting in Indiana Deer Firearms Season was introduced in 2007.  I was talking to a DNR officer at the Deer and Turkey Expo and he said it was a way to get more young hunters interested in hunting.

Mike Ferris “Big Buck”

Here is an 8-point “Big Buck” harvested by Mike Ferris. Mike says this is the largest buck he has ever taken.  He got the “Big Buck” in Brown County on opening weekend of firearms season.    Good job Mike!!!!!
